Character Name: "Black Leg" Sanji Vinsmoke
Character Age: 21
Canon: One Piece

History: Pre-Timeskip and Post-Timeskip
Personality: Sanji's defining trait, the one Oda shoved down our throats during this rescue Sanji arc, is his kindness. This overall impression of kindness is not just a singular trait however. It's an accumulation of quirks, flaws, and principles that were only able to achieve harmony after Sanji set sail with the Strawhat Pirates.

The cook's formative years were spent being constantly reminded that he was a useless failure who was better off dead than left alive to taint his family's name. As any child would, he took this to heart, and he's never been able to shake it completely. Sanji only values his life in so much as it is useful to others. Even his ultimate dream to find the legendary All Blue culminates in his being able to prepare better, more varied food for the ones he loves rather than any personal gain. Because what makes him happiest is to make others happy. He will always put others first. This has led to numerous attempts to sacrifice himself for his guardian, crew mates, women, and others whom he can't help but empathize with. Most recently, he's gone as far as putting himself in the line of fire in order to save the very family who used and abused him, even after they threaten everyone Sanji loves. He doesn't even have to like someone in order to risk his life for them; he can downright despise them. He will make sure they know he hates their guts, but even so, he'll still aggressively save their sorry asses. For Sanji, it's not about doing the right thing or being a good person; it's about being a man that will make his true family proud.

Knowing how many sacrifices he was forced to make for his cruel family, it makes sense that the first man to sacrifice himself for Sanji's sake instantly won his loyalty and respect. Chef Zeff, the man Sanji considers to be his true father, beat his own morals and principles into Sanji's thick skull quite literally. He taught Sanji how to fight, how to cook, and how to appreciate life for all its precious fragility. He instilled in the boy "how to be a man" by always treating women well and feeding anyone who is hungry. Sanji lived to be acknowledged by him as a child. Now he lives to make him proud. Zeff's code of conduct has become his own, and to this day, he refuses to hurt a woman or leave even an enemy to starve. It's nearly killed him and has caused his precious crew mates trouble more than once, but they accept and appreciate it as an unyielding part of his character. This "kishido" or chivalry of his exemplifies the core of his identity. Despite his crude demeanor, sharpened through working with Zeff's thuggish staff in order to combat trouble-making pirates, he would rather die than betray it.

For outside observers, Sanji's most obvious trait is undoubtedly his weakness to women. It goes far beyond being unable to hurt them. Sanji is absolutely obsessed with women and likes to think of himself as a suave ladies man. He is anything but. Viola, whose ability allows her to read minds, is slapped in the face with this unfortunate fact when she tries to use Sanji to gain information on the Strawhat Pirates and instead is bombarded by a litany of erotic, perverted thoughts. Even while bound, wounded, and captured by the enemy, all he can think about is Viola herself. Luckily for everyone around him, he does have a filter for these thoughts - most of the time - and they usually remain just that, thoughts. The energy he gets from looking at a beautiful woman is put to use complimenting, pampering, protecting, and serving that woman hand and foot long before she ever allows him to touch her. This means he ends up being used by quite a few women who know his reputation, but his attitude doesn't change even when he discovers their plans. Once he gets over the initial shock, he doesn't seem to mind at all, immediately forgiving even the harshest of abuse heaped upon him. He's the type of man who can (and does) look the woman who is going to kill him in the eye and tell her she's beautiful with complete sincerity.

Aside from these stubborn quirks, Sanji is surprisingly levelheaded for a One Piece character. He's confident as well as independent enough to act on his observations at a moment's notice, and yet the only time he'll act without thinking is when he's surprised by a gorgeous woman. Though he goofs off and has quite a temper while the coast is clear, in the heat of battle, he's very aware of the big picture and eager to exploit his options. He's impersonated enemies in order to report that his friends were killed when they weren't, disappeared during an all-out skirmish in order to cause a whirlpool that trapped the marine ships chasing his crew, and secretly sabotaged the main engine of an enemy airship so that even after he was defeated in battle he could allow his crew mates to escape. He consistently thinks outside of the shounen protagonist bubble. In fact, his fighting specialization is in Observation Haki over Armament Haki, making his ability to sit tight and see the situation from every angle rather invaluable when he's working with his brutally straightforward captain and first mate.

Because he is able to think several steps ahead, he also ends up as something of a babysitter for other members of the crew who don't. Looking after others, though it's not something he aspires to outside of the women in his life, always seems to be the role he finds himself in. Despite how loudly he will complain when his companions are men, he will still do everything in his power - both physical and mental - to make sure the people in his care get out alive. From something as minor as teaching Chopper, the youngest member of the Strawhats, how to live like a man to something as major as leaping into a poisoned lake in order to retrieve a complete stranger's missing torso, Sanji just can't seem to leave anyone who's struggling alone. And as he himself states, once you've interfered in someone else's business, it's your responsibility to finish what you've started. Sanji more than anyone else aboard the Thousand Sunny considers it his responsibility to ensure the day-to-day health of his charges. He is, after all, their chef.

Inventory: Collared shirt, pants, tie, dress shoes, a pack of cigarettes, and a lighter

Abilities: Sanji is the third member of the monster trio, the Strawhat Pirates' main fighting force. His strength and speed are immense, and his threshold for pain is out of this world. His "Black Leg Style" martial art relies on leg strength above all, but it requires perfect balance, agility, flexibility, and upper body strength as well. He is also a haki user, allowing him to sense spiritual energy from a distance and use life force to strengthen his body.

Body strength and endurance are key to Sanji's fighting style as he rarely uses weapons. Under Zeff's tutelage, he's trained his entire body to the extreme. His kicks have sent giant crocodiles and sea monsters flying, and he's even killed then hauled a dinosaur across a tropical pre-historic island with ease. He's endured electrical attacks that disintegrated other men and even the pressure at 5000 feet below the water's surface. Because he fights using his body, he also breaks bones on a regular basis. After winning his fight with Mr. 2 Bon Clay, he nonchalantly asks himself how many ribs he's broken before he proceeds to run around the capital city of Alabasta as if nothing is wrong. When he does finally succumb to his injuries, he displays the typical shounen protagonist trait of seemingly being able to recover with only some sleep and food. Unlike his captain, however, just because he can act like he's completely recovered doesn't mean he is.

While his strength and endurance are admirable, Sanji's true ability lies in his speed. From the moment he's introduced, his ability to appear and disappear during battle is highlighted. He only gets faster as time goes on, until he successfully dodges bullets at point blank range. This ridiculous speed leads to his latest techniques "Sky Walk" and "Blue Walk." By kicking the air or water repeatedly at great speeds, he can essentially run with no ground beneath him.

As a cook, he prides himself in his mastery of fire, and in typical One Piece fashion, he takes that pride to absurd heights. In order to enhance his kicks, Sanji is able to heat his own legs by spinning rapidly. His legs burn hot enough to glow bright red and set fire to whomever or whatever they impact. One kick can even grill a kraken tentacle while under the water. He calls this technique "Diable Jambe." Sanji can also set himself ablaze by revisiting his traumatic experiences in the Kamabakka Queendom. Why his own flames don't burn him alive, nobody knows. They certainly barbeque his targets.

Finally, Sanji is a user of haki, One Piece's magical energy force. Observation Haki is his specialty, and he utilizes it often. It has allowed him to search for items and people too far away to see, dodge projectiles, and even detect a person's sincerity. This ability is how he is able to see that Captain Tashigi has lost her fight against Vergo and come to her aid despite having been nowhere near the fight while it was occurring. It's easy to deduce when he feels one person's energy withering in despair while another right next to it is flaring cruelly. Along with Observation Haki, Sanji can also use Armament Haki to harden his body. It's very clear when he is utilizing this type of haki as the leg he hardens with haki turns black.

Sanji has several skills he puts to use outside of battle as well.

First and foremost, Sanji is a chef. That is his role aboard the Strawhat's ship, and that is what he lives his life for. In fact, the reason he will only fight using his legs is because he needs his hands to cook and therefore can't injure them. His encyclopedic knowledge of ingredients and precise taste make him a very resourceful chef, perfect for long voyages that require scavenging to bolster supplies. Though he specializes in being a cook of the sea and is fondest of preparing seafood, he prides himself in being able to make anything from juicy steaks to wedding cakes. He's also dexterous with knives, able to perform flashy tricks like juggling for performative cooking. He won't ever use them in a fight though; kitchen knives are too sacred for something like that.

He is in possession of the 99 Attack Cuisine recipes from the Kamabakka Queendom. Attack Cuisine is a special form of cooking that builds up physical prowess. These recipes are enormous meals that can rejuvenate as well as strengthen those who eat them if prepared properly.

Sanji is also capable of being unexpectedly stealthy. His pragmatic streak keeps him from charging into every situation like his captain Luffy, and that allows him ample time to think about what counter attack will effectively impede the enemy's numbers. Even though Sanji himself prefers a straight up fight, he's long since honed the ability to sneak around for a surprise attack or slip away in the middle of a battle. He is able to board a sea train guarded by the elite CP9, renowned masters of espionage, without being discovered. He dashes between two fighters in order to attack one and rescue the woman he's taken hostage without either fighter seeing him before he gets away. He even manages to evade the many members of Big Mom's crew meant to keep track of him while being held prisoner on Whole Cake Island, enabling him to discover Big Mom's plan to kill his family, relay her plot to his sister, and later snatch up Luffy before Big Mom's pirate horde can. His speed is ideal for quick and quiet infiltration, and his wit is what allows him to put that speed to practical use.

Flaws: Sanji is a wanted man, after all, a criminal. While he's not evil, he's certainly chaotic.

His lustful flirting is ridiculous at best, sexist at worst. He's a chain smoker. He has a hair-trigger temper, especially when it comes to Zoro, food, or his biological family, and as such, he beats anyone who insults his loved ones in front of him half to death. As a pirate, he's attacked marines with as much impunity as other pirates, kidnapped a weapons developer to use as a hostage, taken part in declaring war against the Tenryuubito who control the World Government, and "stolen" plenty of riches from countries he's helped saved. Sanji himself would cite the fact that he's brutally attacked his own captain (a heinous crime among pirates) even if he was trying to protect him in doing so, as well as the fact that he let a good man die so that he could save his murderous, unfeeling family.
